The Southwest Florida Regional Technology Partnership selected dESCO LLC and Polygon Solutions Inc. for top recognition at its Fifth Annual Technology Awards Ceremony brought to you by CenturyLink on Wednesday, March 20th, 2013.

Polygon Solutions Inc. was honored in the “Transformation” category for its development of the most advanced rotary broaching tool holder on the market. Adjustment free with low maintenance, this machine tool fits nearly every turning machine on the market today. Manufacturing Engineer Jim Cox and CEO Steve Derbin were on hand to accept the award for Polygon. The other finalists in this category were T3Communications that meets demands for enhanced communication services and Video Career Finder who had developed an innovative method for candidates to introduce themselves to employers.

dESCO LLC of Fort Myers was honored in the “Savvis Direct Innovention” category for its service management suite. The other finalists in this category were Naples Network Services with devices used to monitor homes and business to provide alerts for flooding / HVAC failure and Position Logic that provides both hosted and enterprise GPS tracking platform software and location-based services.

A third award, for “Partnership,” was presented to SWFRTP Programs Chair Volunteer Stephen Craig, for his endless hours committed to providing quality, monthly events to educate and connect the SWFL technology professional community. Finalists in this category were board member Marc Farron of Surround Technologies and board member Kim Brown of Diversified Services.

The Awards Ceremony is Southwest Florida’s longest-running, high-profile “excellence in technology” event. This year’s keynote Speaker was Gary Beach, Publisher Emeritus of CIO Magazine, who spoke to the educational dismemberment of America and encouraged attendees to engage with the youth of today through mentoring or teaching and encouraging interest in technology fields. On the first National Manufacturing Day, October 5th, 2012, Polygon Solutions Inc. hosted an open house and project for students to teach them about manufacturing. Although none of the students said they were interested in manufacturing before the class, many said they would now consider it.

The Southwest Florida Regional Technology Partnership, a member of Lee County’s Horizon Council, is the only organization dedicated solely to promoting the growth of the technology sector in Southwest Florida.

On February 21, 2013, women engineers, along with their male counterparts, will engage and mentor as many as one million girls around the country during National Engineers Week Foundation’s 12th Annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. This empowering day is packed with workshops, lab tours, on-line discussions and interactive, hands-on activities at businesses, universities, libraries and other venues across the country. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is one of the tent pole events that make up Engineers Week 2013, February 17-23, 2013.

Polygon Solutions Inc. will host a shop tour and interactive program about engineering. Polygon is a manufacturer of rotary broach tools, used to make hexagon and square holes using modern CNC machines, and is inviting girls from Lee Virtual School to learn more about engineering as a career choice. Polygon Solutions has selected Lee County’s Virtual School as their school in the Dream It! Do It! Adopt a School program with the MAF Center for Advanced Manufacturing Excellence.

“Florida manufacturers are poised to capture their fair share of the world’s manufacturing but they must have skilled, educated and certified workers.” said Al Stimac, President of the Manufacturers Association of Florida. Many girls are convinced that engineering is a field that does not readily embrace female professionals. The inspiring message of Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day turns that assumption on its head. The next generation will see the end of the long held belief about engineering and gender, in which men have traditionally dominated. For young women interested in engineering, the walls are coming down, the ceiling is cracking and the opportunities have never been greater or more exciting.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, 2013, is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space. Dr. Ride was a leading proponent of STEM education, an early participant in Girl Day and an inspiration for girls and women around the world. Dr. Ride’s work continues through Sally Ride Science (www.sallyridescience.com), the company she founded to educate and engage young learners.

“Sally was deeply committed to fostering girls’ interest in STEM. We are honored by this dedication and applaud Engineers Week’s efforts to attract more girls to engineering,” said Dr. Karen Flammer, co-founder of Sally Ride Science. Polygon is a member of the Southwest Regional Manufacturing Association, and partners with other local manufacturers to improve conditions for manufacturing sustainability and economic growth in the region.

Polygon Solutions Inc. continues to expand the variety of rotary broaches it is manufacturing. This gear shaped rotary broach can be used to make holes with the matching form using a lathe or mill. Common methods of hole preparation include using an oversize pilot hole to create individual chips at each tooth, or using small end mills to remove as much material as possible before finishing the hole with the broach and broach brake.

Custom rotary broaches fit into Polygon Solution’s standard adjustment free rotary broach holder, or can be made to fit adjustable broach holders. Standard rotary broach dimensions are .500″ shank diameter x 1.75″ length. Swiss broaches have an 8mm diameter shank and 1.25″ overall length. Broach materials include hardened M-2, M-42, PM M-4 or PM T-15. Coatings are also available.

Gear shaped rotary broaches are another example of Polygon Solution’s innovative machine tooling. Even when rotary broaching may not seem practical, Polygon has been able to help customers interested in rotary broaching these forms to create custom tooling using multiple roughing and finishing broaches. This method of using multiple broaches mimics the multiple teeth of convention broaches, but can eliminate secondary operations.
